Scottish Water’s Energy Challenge … and Renewable Energy Solutions
Imagine an electricity bill of in excess of £40 million per annum…. That’s what Scottish Water was facing…. Increasing treatment standards for water and wastewater treatment and increasing energy prices mean that this cost is forecast to increase significantly in the next few years. In order to reduce this business exposure and miminise the impact on customers’ charges, Scottish Water has adopted a multifaceted approach to the energy challenge. The approach includes demand management, facilitating large scale renewable energy generation on Scottish Water assets and also investment by Scottish Water in anaerobic digestion, small scale hydro, wind and photovoltaics energy.
