A985 Kincardine Bridge Southern Piled Viaduct replacement

30 March 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

The Kincardine Bridge which is a Category A listed structure is made up of multiple connected spans, including a piled viaduct at the southern end, which was assessed by civil engineers in 1984 as substandard in design.

Since then, the viaduct has been closely monitored, and a steel propping system was installed in 1992 to provide interim structural support.

In the later part of 2022 tenders were issued to appoint a contractor to demolish the southern piled viaduct and replace it with a completely new reinforced concrete structure. Transport Scotland has recently awarded a £16.85m contract to replace an 80-metre section of the Kincardine Bridge to Balfour Beatty. Transport Scotland’s operating company for the South East of Scotland, BEAR Scotland is managing the project with the detailed design being carried out by Jacobs.

Disruption to road users will be minimised during the works by diverting traffic along a temporary two-lane bridge, to be constructed alongside the old viaduct. This temporary bridge will also provide access for pedestrians. Once complete, the new viaduct will be similar in appearance to adjacent spans on the original bridge, with street lighting columns and parapets from the demolished viaduct reinstated on the new structure.

Join us online to listen to a talk about the scheme, presented by Mark Robertson and Gary McInnes from Jacobs, who both worked on the project.
