Community Broadband – The ultimate DIY project
6 February 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 4:30 pm
FreeRural communities can have great need for broadband but are often last on the list of places where it will be installed. What can be done if you live in a rural community and want broadband but don’t want to wait forever? Answer – install broadband yourself for your local community! In Scotland, this has done been a number of times via forming a community broadband Community Interest Company (CIC).
A number of such community broadband CICs have been supported by HUBS, itself a non profit CIC organisation dedicated to providing advice, support and shared infrastructure for community broadband. The purpose of HUBS is to facilitate operation at scale through collective purchasing and pooling of engineering resources and to enable its members to fully participate in the Internet. It grew out of research at the University of Edinburgh School of Informatics and the University of Stirling and is supported by the Summerhall TechCube, Fluency Communications and Okapi Communications and the Scottish Government.
Come along to hear about community broadband, CICs and HUBS. Learn about the work which goes into installing community broadband and the benefits it brings to businesses and residents in rural communities.
Our Speaker, Professor Buneman was instrumental in the formation of HUBS and is a distinguished academic at the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
This Event is open to all.
