Energy Storage Systems

This talk will cover recent developments in the field of energy storage at local micro-grid and the National Grid. It will touch on a range systems including energy storage media including Phase Change Materials, oils, chemicals, solids and hot water and thermal mass in buildings, grid level energy storage for electricity and transport, hydrogen and fuel cells and control systems for optimising micro-grids and thermal systems and battery technology.
The bulk of the talk will deal with two micro-grid projects in Scotland (ORIGIN project at Findhorn) and France (NICE grid) and the very different interfaces between homeowners and the grid managers have been developed to exploit energy storage within the systems.

Speaker – Professor Sue Roaf

Susan Roaf is Professor of Architectural Engineering at Heriot Watt University and an award winning teacher, architect, solar pioneer and author of 17 books. Having worked around the world in archaeology, anthropology, landscaping, architecture and architectural engineering her latest book is on adaptive design for resilience and comfort in a rapidly changing world.
