Engineering Challenges of the Extremely Large Telescope

The European Southern Observatory is building what will be the world’s largest optical and infrared telescope on a mountain top in the Chilean desert.

At 39m in diameter it will be four times bigger than anything available now. The talk will describe why it is being built and the challenges in mechanical, civil, electrical and systems engineering of this 1.2 billion Euro project.
