Glasgow’s Clyde Bridges: an engineer guided walk

9 June @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm

The bridges of the River Clyde are an amazing record of Glasgow’s transformation over the years, from an ecclesiastic settlement, through it’s days as an industrial powerhouse, to today’s vibrant and cosmopolitan city. Not only do they connect communities but they document history, with new bridge construction continuing today.

This engineer led walk will explain the engineering behind the different bridges and how they represent the changing transport habits of Glaswegians; from the pedestrian and horse traffic of the middle-ages through the railway mania of the 19th century, the growth of cars in the 20th century, to today’s need to reduce pollution and reliance on fossil fuels and focus on more active ways of travelling.

The walk is being offered as part of Glasgow Science Festival, which engages with people from all ages and backgrounds, and this walk will reflect that.

It will start from Glasgow Science Centre, walking towards the city centre.
