Glenmuckloch Energy Park: repurposing an open-cast coal mine for pumped hydro storage
11 February @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Glenmuckloch Energy Park is a proposed pumped hydro storage scheme located in the Southern Uplands of Scotland with a 210MW capacity capable of delivering around 1.6GWh over 8 hours.
Glenmuckloch Energy Park is located either side of the Southern Upland and Sanquhar Faults presenting varied and challenging ground conditions.
The lower reservoir of the development is located in an abandoned open-cast coal mine which ceased major coal production in 2013 leaving a partially restored void.
There has been a complex history of both underground and surface mining on the site which present several ground engineering challenges. The development takes advantage of the form of the existing void to form the lower reservoir with the upper reservoir located on higher ground to the north.
To date, there have been two phases of ground investigation to inform the reference design. This presentation will discuss Arup’s development of the reference design.
Doors will open for in-person attendees at 17:30 with the presentation beginning at 18:00.
