Hydrogen Train – a game changer for Scotland’s rail rolling stock?
Dr Ben Todd will talk about his work on the engineering challenges of converting a train to run on hydrogen
Joint meeting with the University of Glasgow
NB – We are running this as both an in-person event, numbers of attendees are capped at 50 due to Covid restrictions, and an on-line event
Synopsis:
This lecture will look at the project which will convert a retired ScotRail Class 314 train to hydrogen-power – a cleaner, greener alternative to diesel for non-electrified routes. Transport Secretary Michael Matheson said: “This project has the potential to be a game changer for the future of Scotland’s rail rolling stock.”
“Our Rail Decarbonisation Action Plan sets out to make our passenger railways emissions free by 2035, but to maximise our climate change ambitions, there is also a requirement to look at what we do with retired stock. If we can bring those back into use in a carbon neutral way, there are huge climate gains to be made.”
Dr Ben Todd is Founder and CEO of Arcola Energy, a systems engineering company and Tier 1 supplier specialising in hydrogen, fuel cells, and batteries. Ben has been involved in fuel cells for nearly 20 years, having earned his PhD in engineering at Cambridge University
