Managing benefits from projects – the NHS way

23 October 2014 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

£10

The public view is that NHS projects will cost too much and deliver too little – and yet many are successful but go unnoticed. We will look at how to apply benefits management to achieve results, improve delivery of benefits, and gain recognition.  We’ll also explore how badly used Benefits Management can do more harm than good.

One of the challenges to the success of big projects is that the driving force becomes political and the business case has long been forgotten by the time the project is implemented. It means that they rarely deliver on the original objectives. This applies particularly to public sector projects, which can’t hide from the newspapers in the way that commercial failures can.

The NHS in England has particular challenges – the challenges of engaging with the public (patient data formerly GPES – General Practice Extraction Service); of engaging with staff (CFH – Connecting for Health); of delivering change (many A&E and care pathway changes); and of course making the change before a government of a different political persuasion reverses everything.

Benefits management, properly delivered, could solve all of this, but benefits management isn’t a single simple thing – it’s implemented in different ways, with varying levels of credibility. Based on extensive experience of projects and programmes at all levels within NHS, Hugo Minney will show what has worked and what hasn’t, and distil the lessons into a blueprint for making more projects succeed in any environment.

Dr Hugo MinneyHugo Minney PhD, RPP, MAPM, gained the Registered Project Professional (RPP) award earlier this year as a result of delivering highly complex projects and programmes in NHS. Over the last fifteen years he’s prepared business cases and seen projects through to successful evaluation and ongoing contracting.

Hugo’s projects and programmes are successful because he begins with the end in mind – “what are we actually trying to do?” – and measures and reports to stakeholders at all stages of the project. This keeps people engaged, and secures the investment needed for change. Hugo manages a GP-led provider company caring for around 170,000 patients.

Hugo is a committee member of the APM Benefits Management SIG and is the lead author of the benefits management section in the APM Body of Knowledge 6th Edition.

This event is aimed at professionals with an intermediate level of experience.

Refreshments at 6pm, event start at 6.30pm.
