Opening up the Gas Market and AGM

24 May 2017 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

One small Scottish town is set to change the gas industry for the better…

SGN’s innovative ‘Opening up the Gas Market’ project based in the remote Scottish highland town of Oban aims to pioneer a future where gas sources are clean, secure and affordable. This project is the first step towards the largest transformation of the UK gas industry since the conversion from towns to natural gas in the 1960s.
All natural gases have slightly different chemical compositions depending on the source. However current regulations only permit gases with a composition similar to North-Sea gas to be used in the UK. All other gases need to be processed before entering the network… and this is an expensive operation. This project will demonstrate that processing isn’t necessary and the regulations can be changed, ensuring more sources of gas such as imported LNG, shale gas, coal-bed methane, biomethane and hydrogen can be used in the network, leading to greater market competition and a more secure, diverse and low carbon energy mix.
The presentation shall be preceded by the Scotland South East Network Annual General Meeting.
