The practical application of Management Science

5 December 2018 @ 2:00 pm - 4:30 pm

Free

Recent work with Bruce Power, a Nuclear operator in Canada, explored different models for decision support related to maintenance activity during outages. The research focused on developing a decision support tool that was able to capture the rich engineering knowledge of operators and engineers, alongside the detailed data logs that were collected on activities.

This talk will do three things. First, it will present an interesting engineering challenge that due to the uniqueness of the Bruce Power site, many will be unfamiliar with. Second, it will present the developed solution and discuss how the tool has been used to date. Finally, it will reflect on the development of decision support tools alongside engineering applications, and some generic learning that emerged from the project.

The speaker is Dr Matthew Revie of the Department of Management Science at the University of Strathclyde Business School (SBS).
Mathew’s primary role is to support the department’s external engagement agenda by establishing high quality projects in the area of Decision Analysis and Risk Management. He has worked on over 40 projects with more than 20 different organisations. He has published in high quality journals and is responsible for supervising and managing the output of 6 postdoc researchers and 6 PhD students. He is on the editorial board of the IMechE Journal of Risk and Reliability, on the Board of Directors for the European Safety and Reliability Data Association, and a Fellow of the Operational Research Society. He is also Director of external engagement for the Department of Management Science and Associate Dean for External Engagement for SBS.
