Welding Glass to Metal Using Ultrashort Pulsed Lasers

1 October 2019 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Free

In this presentation Prof Duncan Hand and Dr Paulina Morawska of Heriot Watt University will discuss the development of an ultrashort pulsed laser process to weld transparent optical materials such as glass or optical crystals, to opaque structural materials such as metals.

This process uses picosecond or femtosecond pulses from a laser, focused down to a very small spot at the interface between the two materials. This results in plasma formation and hence a small melt volume at the interface, which subsequently cools to create a weld.

By translating the laser beam in an appropriate pattern, larger weld areas can be built up, providing strong permanent welds. They will provide details of the process and how thy are currently exploiting it with their industrial partners in order to apply it to industrial manufacturing.
