Best known for building some of the UK’s most iconic engineering structures, such as the Forth and Tay Bridges, and Tower Bridge in London, Sir William Arrol & Co was responsible for the construction of a much wider range of buildings and structures. Miles Oglethorpe will explain that, from the 1880s on, and throughout both World Wars in particular, Arrol’s company was an industry behind industry without which large sectors of the Scottish and UK economies could not have functioned.…

This talk will be by Iain Quinn, Clyde Steamers’ Historian and tour guide on the Paddle Steamer Waverley. It will be based on the book recently published to raise funds for the Waverley https://waverleyexcursions.co.uk/product/scottish-steamers-in-the-1930s/. In the talk, Iain will share high quality, before unseen photos including ones of Fairfield built paddle steamers from this decade. Copies of the book will be available to purchase at the talk (£20 cash).
